It was a great privilege to meet one of the legendary players of the great West Indian team of the ’80s, one of the greatest opening batsmen the game has known, Desmond Haynes. He was also the guest of honor at the annual San Diego Cricket Club gala, where he gave an inspiring keynote speech and presented achievement awards to the club’s senior and youth players. But more than anything, what touched our hearts was the amount of time and attention he spent on the youth, talking to them about his personal experiences, what the game meant to him and has given him, what it means to be a professional sportsman, advise and life lessons. Before he bade farewell, he promised to visit us again soon.
